Disable Auto Restart After Windows Update In Vista

August 31st, 2008

Yes, especially in vista. That auto restart feature after the windows update has being given me headache. I left my downloads going over night and then in the morning, the computer was restarted by Windows Update resulting my downloads not finished.

But luckily, there is a way on how to disable auto restart quickly. I spent some time on Google just now and Vola!, I found this tip (Google Rocks!). Okie.. enough talking.. here we go

Whenever you want to stop or disable auto restart, follow the steps:

  1. Press Windows Key + R and enter “cmd” (without quotes) then press enter.
  2. And in the command prompt, type
    net stop "windows update"
  3. Windows will then start stopping the “Windows Update” service. Usually takes 3 to 4 seconds only.

Ok, now you got it disabled. Hey don’t worry, it’s just temporary. I mean when you reboot your PC that service will atomically restarted or you can just enter:

net start "windows update"

I have removed the annoying auto restart and now, can not get updates to work. I have followed the instructions to reset it but still no go. I had this computer for a week and it kept closing down on me shortly after booting up in the morning. Downloads were occuring daily. Now, for some reason, even when I check for download updates, there is nothing there. I’m a little perplexed. It’s as if I have disabled updates completely. Any clues, anyone?

I have another (and better) way to do it:

1 Press Windows Key + R and enter “gpedit.msc” (without quotes) then press enter.
    2 Navigate to:
    Local Computer Policy
    Computer Configuration
    Administrative Templates
    Windows Components
    Windows Update
3 DubbelClick on: No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations
    4 Select Enabled
    5 Press OK
    6 Press File & Exit

    Enjoy

Not all of the editions of Vista has gpedit. Weird though.

    @Mike

gpedit works fine on vista, just not on home basic or home premium. it’s only available on business, enterprise, and ultimate. yes, it’s stupid and annoying. yay for pointless segmentation of features.

Thanks, Ligas :) That worked perfectly for me (I’m running Vista Ultimate) and it was a real nightmare (since I work with music) when I leave my music to rend in high resolution, which is really, Really slow, and my computer restarted automatically – imagine!
Thanks for the great advise :) For all other Vista (or Xp) users, which don’t have the “gpedit.msc” – here’s a link for something useful, which will prevent your machine rebooting after every stupid MS update! – http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/prevent-windows-update-from-forcibly-rebooting-your-computer/
BTW, is it just me, or most of the new “functions” in Vista and win7 really suck, to say the least?
