HJSplit not working on Vista Fix

September 3rd, 2008

If you download large file such as installer or movies, I suppose you’ve already heard about “HJSplit”. For those who didn’t know what “HJSplit” is about, “HJSplit” is a file splitter and joiner. It works like WinRAR but without compress ability. “HJSplit” just splits the files into desired size so the large files can be easliy uploaded/downloaded. But recently..

I faced a problem on HJSplit. Whenever I try to run, it never came up. No running process, no error, nothing. Just nothing happen. I had to use other versions of “HJSplit” such as HJSplit Pro, JAxe and HJSplit Java but nothing is as much powerful as original and classic “HJSplit”.

First I thought the problem was caused by Antivirus. I tried to disable it but the error still persists. But then finally.. I found the solution. It was caused by Windows Vista’s DEP (Data Execution Prevention). If DEP found a program which behaves something strange, then the program was blocked from running by DEP to prevent the system from being attacked.

By default, DEP was set to run only on Windows Core programs and services but in my case I switched DEP to run on every program and services except on exception list and it was not added to the list. Then HJSplit was blocked.

Ok, here I’ll show you how to get back HJSplit running.

  1. Click Start > Run (or press Windows Key + R)
  2. Type “sysdm.cpl” in run box without quotes.
  3. Go to Advance > Settings > Data Execution Prevention
  4. By default, it was  ”Turn on DEP for Essentional Windows…”
  5. If “Turn on DEP for all programs and services except thoose I select: ” was chosen , Click add and browse to “HJSplit.exe” .
  6. Reboot the pc and the HJSplit should be working.

Thanks bro. Sometime I don’t know why some software don’t run properly or do nothing. Now I know I have to check Windows Vista’s DEP.

this didn’t work for me! I have even tried to make it run in compatibility mode with XP. I have also added it to Live One Care blocked programs. Any other ideas? I can run it on my other Vista machine.
